"Former governor George F. Allen kicked off his ninth bid for elective office Saturday by telling more than 400 Republican leaders he wants to join John W. Warner in the U.S. Senate. With Warner at his side, Allen announced formation of an exploratory committee and all but claimed the Republican Party nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Charles S. Robb, D-McLean, in 2000" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, December 8, 1998).

"Warner, a moderate Alexandria Republican who did not support GOP nominee Oliver L. North in the party's 1994 challenge to Robb, said after Allen's speech that he will campaign for the 46-year-old son of the late former Washington Redskins coach George Allen" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, December 8, 1998).

"Robb narrowly defeated North that year, as Warner backed independent Republican J. Marshall Coleman. 'I'm going to be right there and do whatever I can to help him,' Warner said of Allen. He said the chance of anyone successfully challenging Allen for the GOP nod in 2000 is zero" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, December 8, 1998).
